July Update Letter

Hi! Just a quick note to explain why there hasn't been any recent photos ... Our desktop computer died a few weeks ago, and it got me motivated to start backing up all our photos we have stored on our laptop. We have about 4% free space on our c: drive on the laptop at the moment, so I have been uploading all our photos (3 years worth) to web albums, and when I'm finally finished that, I will be saving them to disks ... ugh! Anyway, I haven't been taking any photos recently because I have nowhere to save them at the moment :) So, I will try to put recent photos up again once my "summer project" is finished. Below is a text only copy of our recent prayer letter. If you would like to receive our update letters by e-mail or by "snail mail", please e-mail us and let us know :0)

Dear Friends and Family,
Ooohhagha! Hagaga! Mmmnhm! For those of you who know baby talk, that’s Emma saying “Hi”, and that she “can’t wait to meet you all!” Emma Jane Carlaw was born April 29th, 2008 weighing in at 9.5lbs and was 21 inches long. Yes, I agree she is the cutest baby ever! (Even better yet, she is now sleeping through the night, hence our ability to write this letter). She has been such a blessing and we thank God for her, but she has definitely changed our lives! It’s amazing how little you can get done in a day when you are on a 3 - hour feeding cycle! House-keeping, visitation, sermon prep, correspondence and other daily things become more challenging and time consuming … however, she is so worth it! She has been a tremendous blessing to us already and we are so grateful to our Lord for blessing us with her :0)

In April, before Emma was born, we were very excited to welcome Christine’s parents, Brian and Jane, to Ireland for their very first visit (its amazing how “motivating” a new & first grandchild can be!). They were with us for three weeks, and they were a tremendous help to us for the first two weeks of Emma’s life, and especially following Chris’ emergency c-section. We weren’t able to do very much sightseeing of course, but they are planning to come back to visit again sometime, so we will show them the “sights” next time :0)
In May, we were finally reunited as a team! Bryce, Carolyn, Nathan, and Abigail returned to us from home ministry, and they were introduced to the “newest” member of our team in Douglas.

In June, we were back to some of our “regular routines”:
… Home group came back to being at our house every 2nd Wednesday
… Chris & Emma began attending Ladies ‘Koffee & Kids’ mornings
… Joel went to serve as an officer at the M.C.C. Intermediate (12-15 year olds) Summer Camp for a week. Chris and Emma stayed at home and worked on “sleeping through the night” with very exciting results :0) This is, of course, still a “work in progress” …

With the summer months now upon us, things are slowing down as people are already heading off for summer vacations. We are hoping to use this time to catch up on some of the things we have had to put off until the long-awaited arrival of Emma! For example, Christine is currently taking driving lessons in an effort to pass her driving test (July 17th) and receive her full Irish driving license (please pray for this!) **UPDATE: I passed!! Thanks for praying :0)

We are also looking ahead to our time of home ministry next Spring, 2009. We will be letting all of you know our plans as they become more finalized. We are hoping to visit with as many of you as we can J

We will need to be raising support as well while we are back in Canada. We have had some increases to our support figures since leaving Canada, due to the increase in living costs here in Ireland, and due to the decrease in value of the American dollar. We will be updating you more accurately in our next prayer letter as to where we are at financially. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us directly and we will try to update you sooner.

If you would like to see more pictures of Emma, or of our life here in Ireland, please visit our blog: http://www.carlawcorkboard.blogspot.com/ or you can visit our profiles “Joel Carlaw” and “Christine Carlaw” on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/

Thank you very much for your prayers, encouragement, and your financial support! We pray that you will have a fun-filled summer, with many wonderful memories made J

God Bless,
Joel, Christine, & Emma Carlaw

I'm so looking forward to Spring 2009! As it turns out, I'll be eligible for maternity/parental leave until June 2009, so I'll definitely be free for a visit :o) Mackenzie people LOVE to travel, so we can even make our way to you :o) It will be a precious thing to get to see all of you again, with the special addition of Emma. Talk to you soon.
